Indirect effect (EU) Related Content A principle of interpretation whereby the courts of the member states of the European Union (EU) must interpret national laws (particularly any that implement EU directives) as far as possible in a manner that is consistent with the provisions of EU law even if they do not have direct effect . These principles are defined in s 6(7) as: the general principles of EU law, as they have effect in EU law immediately before IP completion day and so far as they—(a) relate to anything to which section 2, 3 or 4 applies, and (b) are not excluded by section 5 or Schedule 1, (as those principles are modified by or under this Act or by other domestic law from time to time). Indirect effect is a principle of the European Union (EU) law, whereby national courts of the member states of the EU are required to interpret national law in line with provisions of EU law. The principle of indirect effect contrasts with the principle of direct effect , which, under certain conditions, allows individuals to invoke the EU law itself before national courts.
